Tributes Paid to Young Goalkeeper Amelia Aplin

Tributes have been paid across the football community following the passing of 15-year-old goalkeeper Amelia Aplin.

The Oxford United academy player collapsed while playing in a Junior Premier League match against Fulham at the club’s training centre in Horspath on Saturday afternoon. She was taken to hospital but later died that evening.

Amelia had been playing in a Junior Premier League (JPL) fixture when the incident occurred. Thames Valley Police said there were no suspicious circumstances and that the matter has been referred to the coroner.

In a statement, the JPL described Amelia as “an enormously talented goalkeeper” who had proudly represented the league through its All Stars programme.

“To lose a young player with such promise at just 15 years old is a tragedy that is felt deeply across our football community,” the league said.

Martin Brock, chief executive of the JPL, added: “Amelia wasn’t just a goalkeeper; she was a leader and a bright light in our All Stars programme. Her loss leaves a void in the JPL that words cannot adequately fill.”

Tributes have been left at Oxford United’s training ground, including a green goalkeeper shirt bearing Amelia’s name and the number one.

Oxford United said it was offering support to Amelia’s family as well as players, coaches and staff affected by the tragedy. Messages of sympathy have also been shared by clubs across the region and beyond.

Fulham FC Women said the club was “shocked and saddened” by the news, while local clubs including Kidlington FC, Didcot Town and Oxford City have posted messages of condolence.

Amelia was also a student at Aylesbury High School, where headteacher Marieke Forster described her as a “much loved, bright and talented” member of the school community.

“Amelia was a remarkable young woman who brought joy to everyone who knew her,” she said. “She was a gifted athlete and a dedicated student, but more importantly she was a friend to many and a vital part of our school.”

Outside football, Amelia was also a long-time member of Wycombe District Swimming Club, which described her as a “beloved friend” and said it was “devastated” by the news.

The thoughts of everyone in the game remain with Amelia’s family and all those affected at this incredibly difficult time.
